Featured Partnership

More than two decades ago California State Parks launched their Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS) ® Program. PORTS was the first of its kind, taking equity and accessibility to new heights by through virtual field trips.

In 2020, PORTS partnered with CALIE to bring park access and engagement to the next level. Together, created passPORTS, a “blended access” field trip combining virtual with in-park experiences to create a lasting connection between parks and classrooms–and California State Parks and CALIE.

Partnership Priorities

  • Connect educators to integrate park programming into their curriculum seamlessly.
  • Leverage technology to remove barriers of distance, cost, and accessibility, making California’s natural and cultural treasures available to every student.
  • Build community by linking educators, students, and park staff in meaningful, sustained learning experiences where an in-park experience is feasible

Outcomes and Impact

  • Equity in Access: Thousands of students, including those in under-resourced schools, now experience California’s state parks with in-depth virtual and in-park experiences.
  • Enhanced Learning: Educators report increased student engagement, deeper connections to science, history, and culture, and more opportunities to integrate technology into instruction.
  • Sustainable Growth: With CALIE’s educator network and professional learning expertise, PORTS continues to expand its reach and impact, supporting the next generation of learners and leaders.
